Flu Fears

We are gearing up for our big trip home this summer, which is once again being overshadowed by fears of the big epidemic. Our wedding was also impacted by fears of the big global epidemic. Big Fish and his mother had to take 10 days off of work unpaid after returning form Canada, where all the evil diseases come from. Hopefully they don't force Big Fish to do that this time too, because I don't think his branch would survive 20 days without him. They can barely survive 2 hours without him, judging from the 9 phone calls he got while he was cutting Cupcake's cord and having his fist cuddles with her.

The Japanese media is going nuts about Swine Flu. When 3 people coming back from Canada brought swine flu with them, they were ecstatic. Foreign countries are evil! Canada is diseased! Foreigners not wearing masks spread disease! Now, however, 244 more people without foreign ties have tested positive for swine flu and they are freaking out. There are no other news stories at all, whatsoever.

The funny thing is that the coverage is so bad. They go on and on and on about how everyone should wear a mask and that will save them. Of course, the people saying this on tv aren't wearing masks.

No mention is ever made of the action that would actually prevent the spread of disease: washing your hands. Nothing about covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze either. And certainly nothing about buying alcohol gels to clean your hands when you can't get to a tap with warm water and soap (which in Japan is basically everywhere). This really bothers me. My son is 2 and even knows how to wash his hands with soap. Why can't adults here do it?

I am not overly concerned about catching swine flu. I'm just making sure that we keep as healthy as normal. We do wash our hands with soap or alcohol gel if out and about. We cover our mouths when coughing or sneezing. Cupcake is being nursed and the rest of us are drinking probiotics and I hope this keeps us decently healthy. Besides, my grandma survived the Spanish flu as a toddler so I hope her good healthy genes have been passed on to us.

I totally agree with you about the over-reaction going on here. Isn't it awful? That there Canada must be a horrible place...full of sickness. Why would anyone go there?
Ahem.

I can't tell you the number of places here in Tsuruoka that do not have soap in their washrooms....doctor's offices, drugstores, dentist's offices, public washrooms. And what's with the no hot water either?

But really, how about....if you don't feel well, stay home. Do not "gaman". Do not run to the doctor for antibiotics every time you have a sniffle.

Okay. I'll probably get a knock at my door about 10 minutes after I hit post for this. The quarantine police will take me away, I'm sure.

Good post. I agree with you!

It is madness isn't it.I do hope that your Canada plans will go ahead with no problems and worries about being dragged off kicking and screaming when you arrive back here.Hopefully, the fuss will have died down by then.Or that another SMAP member gets stit-faced drunk in public so that the mass media have something new to focus on.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the local reaction here in inaka-ville;so many people are ignoring the media splurge or just rolling their eyes wondering what the big fuss is all about.Too bloody right;)

The panic and hysteria over this is just insane. I guess I am not helping the germy foreigner image as everytime someone brings it up with me I laugh in their face and basically tell them they are stupid. At the end of the day it is just a form of flu. Flu happens! People sometimes die from complications, but this is true with every strain of it. Acting like a nutjob about it isn't going to help anything one way or the other.

Those stupid masks! It kind of reminds me of an accident at a nuclear plant in the kanto area that happened just before I got married 10 years ago. The media was telling people to wear masks and gloves when they went outside because it is a little known Japanese secret that masks and gloves are barriers to radiation! If only those poor people in Nagasaki and Hiroshima had known that there would have been no radiation poisoning for them.
Idiots!!!

The domestic cases were because students were abroad, I know that is obvious and the country is doing their best to prevent, screen airline passengers as much as possible--

The masks works to prevent small particles (when someone sneezes, pollen, etc from entering.. BUT the number one, number one form of transmitting is "hands-to-mouth", the news has show how to wash your hands and Japanese wonder why the other FOREIGN countries don't- on the news they said- The Japanese tend to wash for 30 seconds comparing to N. America, they just rinse--

Obviously kids, teenagers don't exercise the best hygiene but truly the number one way to get the flu is hand to mouth, or if something sneezes literally right in front of you.

The mask in addition to those particles help not spread the flu more so than protect- unless you have a special type..

But the truth is-- most Lawsons, etc run out of soap, they don't refill, etc.

I keep the Germ X or Germ Away at the front of the door, I keep a travel size with me, for example we were out at the dvd shop, touching everything, I just put a bit onto my hands before I get into the car-- when I get home I wash. I carry a pet bottle of tea with me, but am careful not to touch the rim and just drink it--

So far the media here has shown these- so didn't get the "foreign countries are horrible" but I think you'll be just fine by keeping your hands washed... ( I am paranoid of germs)... I know its obvious.

Maybe you should move to PA. Seriously. Then both you and Ryu can be foreigners. Just imagine the love!!!! Luke and Julian can play all day while Jules teaches Meg all of her girly tricks. Heaven. :)
